Breeding quality Charolais cattle has been the Runft family mission since 1956. Grandpa Don and Grandma Hazel were early pioneers for raising Charolais cattle in the state of Kansas. Following in their footsteps, my father, Bruce, came back to the family farm in the 1980's to help with Runft Charolais Ranch. Runft Charolais were known for their "Meat and Muscle" bull sales held every March, where around 80 head of stout, durable, and performance driven sire prospects were sold. RCR had established a favorable reputation, not only with the commercial cattleman, but also in the purebred sector and show ring.
In the fall of 2003, Runft Charolais Ranch had a complete herd dispersal of more than 450 mama cows. It was at this time that I had a talk with my dad and he told me that this would be the prime opportunity to expand my herd and invest in some of the top bloodlines that my Grandpa had been working on for 50 years. I then purchased around a dozen of the top females in the sale, and this with the accumulation of past show heifers, was the foundation of Cody Cattle Company (CCC).
I've not forgotten my valuable and proven lessons from RCR; that stout, durable, and performance driven yearling bulls are what keeps seed stock producers in the business. The bulls CCC markets now are the same type and kind that past RCR bull buyers have become accustomed to. With this being said, these bulls are also bred to be easy calvers and add carcass strengths and maternal value to any herd, all while being efficient enough to maintain and further develop on grass during the breeding season.
The backbone of the CCC herd goes back to G532; as a cow she exceeds each and every expectation of the industry in all facets. She is a stout boned, huge footed, sound structured female that is massive from behind and flawless from the profile. She also has a perfect udder at 9 years of age. She has been flushed several times to sires such as INXS, Wyoming Wind, Rancher, Western Spur, Suspect, and Heat Wave. Still, she never misses; all of her calves are high quality and very easily marketed. Look for her exciting ET progeny in years to come.
Two sires are run at CCC. The most recent addition is D&D INXS whom half interest was acquired at the National Sale in 2006. After being purchased, he was named Grand Champion Bull at Louisville and then again at Denver. He was the Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the Houston Livestock Show and won the Indiana State Fair in 2006 & 2007. INXS was named the 2006-2007 Charolais Show Bull of the Year. The other sire is "3128", who is a Tradition 066 x Dam of Wyoming Wind (2170). His daughters will be coming into production starting in the spring of 2008 and they give every impression of being productive cows. 3128 has bred functionality (rib, width, and fault-free structure) into all of his offspring to date. We've culled several calves out of AI sires, but not one of 3128's has made the trip to town. They are simply the “right kind” of cattle to keep you in the business.
Being a third generation Charolais breeder, I have been fortunate enough to learn from knowledgeable breeders such as my Grandfather and Father. I would like to thank Dad, Stacey, Jaid, Payton, and Mason for all the work and long hours that they put in for me while I was attending Texas A&M and was on the livestock judging team , as well as for the work they still do. I would also like to thank all the past buyers who have put their faith in this breeding program as I do, and look forward to a promising future.
